About the Charleston County Detention Center

Located in North Charleston, SC, the Charlestown County Detention Center was completed in 1966 and updated and expanded in both 1994 and again in 2010. The current top capacity is 1917 inmates in four buildings that include a library, offices, conference rooms, kitchen, laundry, medical department, eight housing units, visitation area and direct supervision units. There is also a juvenile facility that is located a short distance away from the main campus.

A detailed and advanced security system of over 700 cameras that are all visible from the central control station. Two styles of housing are used in the main housing area, which has 4 teams of staff rotating through. One is the direct supervision which has a dayroom centered in the space with cells around the common area, in which officers are in the units and move freely around the unit interacting with inmates. High security inmates are housed in this manner, with lower security inmates being housed in the open bay housing. This type of housing uses an open area that has no cells, but rather bunks that surround the dayroom space. Bunks are assigned to individual inmates so they can be located as needed. Officers are also freely moving around these units and interacting with inmates.

Schedules in the bay housing are less strict than those in direct supervision. Phones are located in the day rooms and are accessible during free hours for any inmate to use. Visitation schedules are key to retaining the outside relationships with people who are incarcerated, and the facility allows onsite visits every day of the week in three time blocks. Visits begin at 8am and end at 10:50am for lunch, resume at 1pm until 4:35pm then break for supper, and the last block is from 6pm until 10pm. Scheduled visits are given priority over walk in visits, and visits can be scheduled for both online and in person. Inmates also have access to tablets through Securus Technologies that allow for messages to passed like emails, e-book access, educational programming and resources, listen to podcasts and listen to music as well as play games or watch TV and movies. These are funded through securustech.net or through the Securus app.
