Autauga Metro Jail Inmate Mail
Send an Inmate Mail in the Autauga Metro Jail
Letters are still one of the best ways to lift the spirits of someone at the Autauga Metro Jail. Follow these steps to give your letter the best chance of getting through, and call 334-361-2600 if you are unsure about anything.
Address it this way:
Inmate's full name and booking number
c/o Autauga County Jail
136 North Court Street
Prattville, AL 36067
You can find the booking number with the sheriff's inmate search.
- Show who the letter is from: a complete return address with your full name. Without one, the jail usually refuses the letter.
- Use plain paper or a plain postcard, written in blue or black ink.
- Do not put in cash, checks, stamps, blank envelopes, stickers, glitter, lipstick, perfume or anything glued on.
- Photos: send only normal printed photos with nothing on the back. Never send nude, gang or weapon photos.
- Books, magazines and newspapers should be mailed straight from the publisher or a store. Call first to ask what is allowed.
- Staff open and read all personal mail. Legal mail from a lawyer is opened in front of the inmate.
Lawyers and courts should send legal mail to the same street address and mark it clearly as legal mail. To put money on an inmate's account, use the jail's online deposit service instead of mailing cash.
Type of Mail Allowed for Autauga Metro Jail
Postcards
The Autauga Metro Jail allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature.
Envelopes
The Autauga Metro Jail may also allow regular postcards and envelopes to be mailed to inmates as well, however more and more jails are no longer allowing envelopes due to concern about paper being dipped into liquefied drugs like methamphetamines and cocaine and then mailed into secure facilities.
To confirm that the Autauga Metro Jail still allows letters in envelopes call 334-361-2600 or view the Inmate Mail Instructions by going here.
Newspapers
Local or national newspapers may also be mailed to the inmate as long as they are mailed directly from the newspaper publisher.
Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.
Books
- Bibles and other reading material will not be accepted, as they are donated by area churches.
- Books for inmates can be ordered and shipped from Books-A-Million or Barnes & Noble.
- When ordering books they must be shipped only by the company.
- Books CAN NOT contain Gang affiliation, or Sexual content. Only two books a month are allowed per inmate.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Autauga Metro Jail standards will be disposed of.
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.

What should the envelope say when writing to a loved one inside the Metro Jail on Court Street?
Start with the inmate's name plus booking number, then add c/o Autauga County Jail, 136 North Court Street, Prattville, AL 36067, and print your return address in the upper left.
Where can I look up an Autauga booking number?
Pull it from the sheriff's roster, which our Autauga inmate lookup page links to, and copy each digit so the Prattville mailroom can match your envelope.
Did Autauga mail rules change after the April 2026 reopening?
Possibly, since the building was vacant for almost two years after the June 2024 mold closure. Phone the Prattville desk at 334-361-2600 to find out whether letters still go to Court Street or now route through a scanning vendor.
Will officers on Court Street let in a novel I bought online?
Check with Metro Jail staff first; publications generally must ship straight from a publisher or retailer, and the officers can tell you which titles pass inspection today.
Where should a defense lawyer mail privileged letters for a Prattville client?
Lawyers can use that same Court Street address and write Legal Mail in bold on the front, so officers open it only in front of the client. Once the letter is on its way, our Autauga deposit guide covers adding funds so your relative can buy stamps.
