At any given time, the Cherokee County Detention Center is licensed to hold 114 inmates, but it is often forced to take in more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails, at least 40% of inmates turn over every month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, and about 8-9% stay six to twelve months. Inmates held more than twelve months are typically facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to get ready for trial, offenders arrested in Cherokee County remain at the Cherokee County facility much longer.
Cherokee County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 2,280 offenders every year.
Sitting on Cedar Bluff Road on the edge of Centre, the Cherokee County Detention Center opened in October 1996 and was renovated in 2004. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Jeff Shaver runs it, with Chief of Corrections Sierra Wilks in charge of the jail. The 114-bed jail holds adult men and women for the county and its towns, including Centre, Cedar Bluff, Gaylesville, and Sand Rock. It also houses state inmates and people held for the U.S. Marshals Service. The address is 110 Cedar Bluff Road, Centre, AL 35960. The jail’s direct line is (256) 927-6435, and the sheriff’s office answers 24 hours at (256) 927-3365. Southern Health Partners provides medical care, with nurses on site daily and a physician. Qualified non-violent inmates can apply for work release with a judge’s and staff approval, and a volunteer jail ministry visits.
Look someone up on the sheriff’s inmate roster; the office also keeps a most wanted page on the same site. For court dates and charges, search Alacourt. If you may have a warrant, call the sheriff’s office or an attorney first and arrange to turn yourself in. Everyone booked must appear before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours (Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3). Cherokee and DeKalb counties make up the Ninth Judicial Circuit.
Bonds are accepted around the clock except 5–7 a.m., 11 a.m.–1 p.m., and 5–7 p.m. They can be cash, property, or written by a bonding company, and you can pay by cash, credit card, or money order. Alabama’s constitution entitles most defendants to bail. Capital charges can be held without bail when proof is evident or the presumption great. Since Aniah’s Law (2022), a judge may also deny bail after a detention hearing for murder, first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, robbery, aggravated child abuse and certain crimes against children, and terrorism. In May 2026, 81.6% of voters approved Amendment 1, which added solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 schedule suggests $10,000–$60,000 for Class A felonies, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for Class A misdemeanors, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI. Judges can go above or below it or allow release on personal recognizance or an unsecured appearance bond.
Since 2018, all visits have been by video, seven days a week, through Inmate Sales (inmatesales.com, (877) 998-5678). Free 20-minute on-site visits run 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. daily for up to three visitors with government photo ID; children must stay with an adult. Hats, tank tops, low-cut tops, short skirts or dresses, and tight shorts aren’t allowed. Remote visits cost $0.20 a minute from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
No public bus serves the jail; most visitors drive. Fuel City at 125 Centre Street and the Texaco at 903 E. Main Street are the nearest gas stations. McDonald’s is at 650 Cedar Bluff Road, and Jack’s Family Restaurant is at 1205 Clarence E. Chesnut Jr. Bypass.
Personal mail goes through JailATM: the person’s name and ID number, JailATM.com – Cherokee County Jail, 1605 Beltline Rd SW D8 #244, Decatur, AL 35601. Put your name and return address in the top left, and use blue or black ink. Legal mail and publications go directly to the detention center. - Each inmate is allowed an unlimited amount of visits per day. Remote visitation is $0.20 per minute.
- Proper attire is required. No low-cut blouses, tank tops, short skirts or dresses, tight shorts, hats or any other form of provocative dress will be allowed. Shirt and shoes must be worn.
- All visitors must provide proper state or government issued photo identification (i.e. driver’s license, foreign id or passports) for inmate visitation.
- On Site video visitation is available at no cost.
- A video visit lasts 20 minutes.
- Visitors may only use this system on the inmates assigned visitation day, whenever the inmates have free time.
- All rules set forth for non-contact visitation shall be adhered to when using the video visitation system.
- Any lewd, profane or inappropriate behavior shall result in loss of video visitation privileges for the visitor and/or inmate.
- Each inmate is permitted a maximum of three on site visitors per session.
- Visitation sign-up is limited and on a first-come first serve basis.
- Visitors are encouraged to go online and reserve a visitation time. Purchased visitation minutes are not transferable.
- An adult must accompany all visitors who are under 17 years of age. Children must be monitored at all times.
- Visitors are not allowed to bring any personal belongings with them into the visitation area other than their picture ID and/or a set of keys unless otherwise allowed by the jail.

Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Cherokee County Detention Center first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.

- If an inmate has available funds on their chirping device they will be able to chirp any cell phone and that chirp will appear to be a normal text.
- If you wish to stop receiving Chirps from an inmate, reply to the Chirp with STOP.
How to Send a Secure Email Message to an Inmate in Cherokee County
