Licensed to hold 196 inmates at any given time, the Marshall County Detention Center often has to make room for more offenders, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails, at least 40% of inmates turn over within a month, another 30% within 90 days, and another 20% within six months. Roughly 8-9% stay incarcerated six to twelve months. Those who stay longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder, and because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Marshall County remain in custody at the Marshall County facility much longer.
Marshall County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 3,920 offenders every year.
The Marshall County Detention Center is at 423 Blount Avenue in Guntersville. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office runs it, and the 24-hour number is (256) 582-2034. The jail is badly overcrowded. It was built for about 190 people, but in 2025 it held more than 350. Work is under way on a 250-bed expansion that will add a medical unit, more mental health beds and a larger women’s section, and it is expected to take until about 2027. The jail holds men and women arrested across the county, including people waiting for trial, people serving county sentences, and people sentenced to prison who are waiting for transfer to the state.
The sheriff’s inmate roster is at marshallso.org, and its most wanted list is at marshallso.org/most-wanted. Anyone who learns there is a warrant for them should check the case on Alacourt (v2.alacourt.com) and call the sheriff’s office or a lawyer before turning themselves in. After booking, Rule 4.3 of the Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure requires an appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours. Marshall County forms the 27th Judicial Circuit on its own.
Under the Alabama Constitution most defendants can be released on bail. Capital defendants may be held when the proof is evident or the presumption great, and Aniah’s Law (2022) lets judges deny bail after a hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Voters widened that list in May 2026 (Amendment 1, 81.6% yes) to include solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 schedule is only a guide, for example $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony or $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor. Release can be on personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond. Cash bonds are posted at the Circuit Clerk’s office Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Property bonds need the sheriff’s approval, usually two owners for a felony, and every signer must bring ID. Only the equity in the property counts. A $35 bond transmittal fee is due in exact cash. Licensed bonding companies also post bonds here.
All personal visits are remote and monitored. Schedule through Inmate Sales at inmatesales.com or at the lobby kiosk; the jail does not take visit bookings by phone. If you go to the jail for the kiosk or to post a bond, no public bus serves it; most visitors drive. Gas is close by at the Marathon at 1038 Blount Ave and the Marathon at 2112 Henry St. For food, there is Wendy’s at 1701 Gunter Ave and Guthrie’s at 14400 US-431.
Since December 1, 2024, the jail does not accept personal mail at the building. Send it to the person’s name and inmate number, Marshall County Jail, P.O. Box 16060, Jonesboro, AR 72401, where it is scanned into their JailATM account. Attorneys can still send legal mail to 423 Blount Ave, Guntersville, AL 35976, marked “Private Legal Mail.” Used books, including religious books, are not accepted. Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Marshall County Detention Center standards will be disposed of.

- If you wish to stop receiving Chirps from an inmate, reply to the Chirp with STOP.
