The Montgomery County Detention Facility is licensed to hold 1290 inmates at a time, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails, at least 40% of the inmate population turns over each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take so long to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Montgomery County on such charges remain in custody at the Montgomery County facility much longer.
Each year, Montgomery County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 26,840 offenders.
If a loved one was arrested by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office or another agency in the county on state charges, they are most likely at the Mac Sim Butler Detention Facility, also called the Montgomery County Detention Facility, at 250 S. McDonough Street in downtown Montgomery, AL 36104. (The Montgomery Municipal Jail is a separate city facility for city cases.) The county jail’s 24-hour number is (334) 832-4985, and the sheriff’s office can be reached at (334) 832-4980. A $50 million, 169,768-square-foot expansion that began in October 2006 raised capacity to 1,290. The building has minimum and medium security housing for men, a separate housing unit for women, multi-purpose rooms for programs in each housing area, and an in-house medical and dental clinic with a pharmacy. People here are mostly awaiting trial, serving county sentences, or waiting for transfer to the state prison system.
The sheriff’s online inmate and warrant search at mcsojail.countygovservices.com lists current inmates with their charges, bond amounts, and booking photos. After booking, Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 requires an initial appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours of arrest. Felony cases go to the 15th Judicial Circuit in Montgomery. Case records are on Alacourt. Anyone who suspects they have a warrant should contact the sheriff’s office or a lawyer before walking in to surrender.
When a bond is set, it can be personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond paid in cash, backed by property located in the county, or written by a licensed bail bond company; call the jail for the amount. Alabama guarantees bail for most defendants. Judges may still deny it in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great, and, after a detention hearing under Aniah’s Law (2022), for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Voters added solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle in May 2026 (Amendment 1, 81.6% yes). The state’s Rule 7.2 schedule suggests $5,000–$30,000 for a Class B felony and $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, though judges can depart from it.
Visiting is by video through IC Solutions. Register first, then schedule at least one day and no more than a week ahead. On-site video visits are Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m. and noon to 5 p.m.; remote visits from home are available daily, including 2:30 to 9 p.m., and cost about $7–$10 for 20–25 minutes. Each inmate gets one 30-minute on-site visit a week with no more than four approved visitors. Anyone 16 or older needs photo ID, and younger children must visit with their guardian. Shorts, sleeveless tops, sheer or low-cut clothing, and gang-related clothing will get you turned away.

The M, Montgomery’s city bus system, runs weekdays and Saturdays from the Intermodal Transit Center at 495 Molton Street in downtown, a short trip from McDonough Street. Understanding the rules completely are the responsibility of both you and your inmate. Not knowing the rules will NOT be accepted as an excuse if you make a mistake and violate them. Disobeying them could result in being banned from have future visits.
• Any inmate or visitor whose behavior is disruptive during a visit may have his/her visiting privileges suspended/terminated.
• All visits are subject to monitoring and recording.
• All visits must be scheduled ahead of time; the IC Solutions calendar shows which time slots are open.
• Be logged in or checked in before the scheduled start time.
• Valid picture identification (e.g., driver's license, State I.D., or Military I.D. with picture) is required of all visitors, with the exception of children under the age of 17.
• Visitors under the age of 17 must be accompanied and supervised by an authorized adult visitor.
• Visitors who 'arrive' after the scheduled start time may not be allowed to visit.
• Clothing must cover all private/sensitive body areas.
• The visitation schedule may be canceled or altered on holidays or for safety/security reasons.

• Internet connectivity issues during offsite visits will NOT be refunded.

Newspapers
Local or national newspapers may also be mailed to the inmate as long as they are mailed directly from the newspaper publisher, however they must get permission and they can only have two publications every six months.

Magazines are not allowed.
Books
The Montgomery County Detention Facility allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address below, however the inmate must get permission up front before you order them.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Montgomery County Detention Facility standards will be disposed of. No more than three books may be shipped at any one time.
