Autauga Metro Jail
Autauga Metro Jail
The Autauga Metro Jail is the 138-bed adult jail for Autauga County, in downtown Prattville. Jail staff answer questions about inmates around the clock at 334-361-2600.
The jail was emptied in June 2024 after mold was found in the building, and inmates were housed elsewhere while it was repaired. People began moving back on April 1, 2026. Some schedules and rules from before the closure may have changed, so call the jail to confirm visiting times before you go.
People arrested anywhere in the county are brought here for booking. Depending on the charges, they may be released on bond, released on their own recognizance, or held until their case is heard in court. Once you find the inmate's booking number, keep it handy for mail, money and visits.

Other Jails and Prisons
To check whether someone is held at the Autauga Metro Jail, use the sheriff's inmate roster. It lists people in custody along with their charges and bond amounts. If the person doesn't show up, call the jail at 334-361-2600.
The jail has 138 beds and reopened on April 1, 2026, after a mold-related closure that began in June 2024, so anyone booked during the closure may have been held at another county's jail. Court records for Autauga County cases are on Alacourt, and the courthouse main line is 334-358-6800.

Search the sheriff's Autauga County inmate search or the jail roster inside the free Autauga County Sheriff app. Fresh arrests show up on our booking page. No luck online? Phone the jail. Mail, deposits and calls all require the person's full name and booking number, so note both. VINELink offers free custody alerts too.
Back in use after a two-year shutdown
Mold discovered inside the Autauga Metro Jail forced the Autauga County Sheriff's Office to clear the building in June 2024. For the length of the shutdown, the county paid other counties' jails to hold its inmates; news reports put that bill above $3 million and the repair bill for the jail and courthouse above $18 million. The return of inmates started April 1, 2026. Rules may have shifted during the move, so a quick call to 334-361-2600 before visiting or mailing anything is a good idea.
Who is booked in
Men and women arrested anywhere in the county land here, whether deputies or Prattville police made the arrest; the county describes the jail as housing both city and county inmates. Most either face felony charges and await court or are Prattville misdemeanor cases. Short sentences may be served on site, while anyone given more than one year moves on to the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC).
Police departments that bring arrests here
Besides sheriff's deputies, two town forces in Autauga County deliver people to this jail:
- Prattville Police Department: 334-595-0208 (after hours, 334-361-9911)
- Autaugaville Police Department: 334-365-9335
Prattville has no lockup of its own, so its misdemeanor prisoners are kept at the Metro Jail with county inmates. For an arrest out in Billingsley or some other small community, the Metro Jail desk at 334-361-2600 can tell you which agency made it.
Getting out on bond
A bond is available to most people held here, and a judge usually fixes the amount within a day or two of arrest. Phone the jail to learn the figure. Payment can be made in cash or through a licensed bonding company, and our Autauga County bail page walks through each step. Jail staff at 334-361-2600 can explain where and when the money is accepted.
Warrants and turning yourself in
The sheriff keeps a Most Wanted page, though a name missing from it does not prove there is no warrant. Deputies will not confirm a warrant over the phone. The sheriff's FAQ page says to come in person, carrying a valid ID, to the Sheriff's Office at 162 West 4th Street in Prattville. Anyone who already knows about a warrant is urged to turn themselves in, and that same page suggests calling the circuit clerk's office first (criminal desk 334-358-6807) to learn the bond so the money is ready.
Bond steps for this jail are spelled out on our Autauga Metro Jail bail guide, and visiting days sit on the Autauga visitation page.
Location and contacts
Downtown Prattville is home to the jail, at 136 North Court Street, Prattville, AL 36067, steps from the Autauga County Courthouse at 134 North Court Street. It serves as the adult lockup for all of Autauga County, Alabama. Questions about an inmate go to jail staff at 334-361-2600. Sheriff Mark Harrell's headquarters sits a few blocks off at 162 West 4th Street, Prattville, phone 334-361-2500.
About the building
Opening its doors in May 2004, the Metro Jail took over from a county lockup dating to 1970. Official county figures list 138 beds and roughly 40 employees. Architects rated the structure for 242 people, according to the county commission chair in news coverage, yet the second floor was never completed.
Court cases
Within Alabama's 19th Judicial Circuit, county felony and misdemeanor cases are tried at the Autauga County Courthouse, 134 North Court Street, Prattville (334-358-6800). Anyone booked on a Prattville city charge answers to the Prattville Municipal Court (334-595-0450). Case records can be pulled up on Alacourt or through the public access portal, and our court page breaks down each clerk's office.
Visiting
Before the 2024 closure, visits happened on weekends, grouped by housing pod, and only for people on the inmate's visitor list. Today's slot can turn on the inmate's last name or pod, so ring 334-361-2600 for the time set aside for your person before making the drive. Our visitation page keeps the last known rules. NCIC handles remote video visits.
Deposits and calls
NCIC Inmate Communications lists the "Autauga County Metro Jail" among the sites where funds can be added online at ncic.com. That money pays for calls and other services. Current options are explained on our money page and phone page. Except for approved legal calls, every call and message is recorded.
Sending a letter
The top line of the address is for the inmate's name and booking number, and your own name and return address go on the envelope too. Stick to plain white paper and blue or black ink. Leave out cash, stamps, stickers, glitter, and anything glued or taped; most jails discard mail that breaks the rules. For mail questions, the jail's number is 334-361-2600; the address to use is below:
Inmate's full name and booking number
c/o Autauga County Jail
136 North Court Street
Prattville, AL 36067
Legal mail goes to that same street address and should be clearly labeled. Deposits belong with the online service rather than the mailbox, unless jail staff approve a money order.
Picking up property
When an inmate signs a property release, a relative may be allowed to collect items such as clothing, keys or a phone. Phone 334-361-2600 first to find out when to come and which ID to bring.
Parking and nearby stops
With the jail in the middle of downtown Prattville, most visitors drive, and parking fills up on court days. East Main Street has Wendy's (696 East Main Street), American Deli (700 East Main Street) and Hardee's (706 East Main Street). Gas is close at the Chevron, 101 North Memorial Drive, and the Sunoco, 299 North Memorial Drive. Baymont, 104 Jameson Court in Prattville, offers rooms.

- Before the 2024 closure, Pods 5 through 8 had visits on Saturday and Pods 1 through 4 on Sunday, and only people on the approved list could visit. Treat that as history, not as the current plan.

- Commissary money goes through NCIC online deposits. While you're on the phone, ask whether a lobby kiosk takes cash on visit day; the jail accepts mailed money orders only with staff approval.
