Arkansas County Juvenile Detention Inmate Bail & Bonds
Arkansas County bail and bond: the DeWitt jail and two county seats
One jail serves a county that has two courthouses. Whether the arrest came from the sheriff, Stuttgart police, or DeWitt police, the booking happens at the Arkansas County Jail, 1000 Ricebelt Avenue, DeWitt. This page covers who sets bail, where to pay, bondsman fees, property bonds, the public defender, juvenile detention, refunds and who to call.
Check custody first with the Sheriff's official inmate search. A person arrested in Stuttgart has a 20-mile ride south first, so the record often trails the booking by an hour or more. Our Arkansas County Inmate Search page covers the rest of an arrest: who is in custody, warrants, charges, mugshots, property and getting a public defender.
Your first step is a call to the jail desk at 870-659-2064. Ask whether a bond amount has been posted for every charge and which payment types it takes. The sheriff keeps 24-hour lines in both towns: DeWitt 870-659-2060 and Stuttgart 870-659-2066. Hearing steps are on our Arkansas County court guide.
1. Is my person in the DeWitt jail yet?
Start with the custody search linked at the top. A name that does not come up yet is worth a call to the desk at 870-659-2064. A person arrested in Stuttgart has a 20-mile ride south first, and the record often trails the actual booking by an hour or more. The jail also holds some people for other agencies, so ask which one made the arrest.
↑ Back to the question list2. Stuttgart or DeWitt: where will the case be heard?
The county has a Northern District with its courthouse at 302 South College Street in Stuttgart, and a Southern District with its courthouse at 101 Court Square in DeWitt. Where the arrest happened picks the side. The circuit clerk's office handles felony and juvenile files in both: Stuttgart 870-659-2098, extension 1, and DeWitt 870-659-2099, extension 1.
Misdemeanors and traffic tickets go to district court. Stuttgart District Court is at 304 South Maple Street, 870-673-7951. DeWitt District Court is at 120 Court Square, 870-946-2503, and it also covers Gillett and St. Charles.
↑ Back to the question list3. Who picks the dollar amount?
A judge. Local judges adopt a written schedule for common charges, then adjust for the person's record, roots in the county, and the facts of the case. Felony charges go to the circuit judge for this district. Misdemeanors stay with the district judge. Whatever figure is set goes on the booking record, which the jail desk can read to you.
↑ Back to the question list4. How soon does a judge see the file?
Rule 8.1 of the Arkansas Rules of Criminal Procedure says a first appearance must come without unnecessary delay. In real life that usually means within two to three days. Many charges already carry a scheduled amount, so release can be the same day. An arrest late on a Friday may wait for Monday's docket. Phone the jail desk each morning and ask whether a number has been posted for every charge.
↑ Back to the question list5. Where do I hand over the money, and when?
The jail at 1000 Ricebelt Avenue in DeWitt is the place to start. Cash bonds are generally taken through the jail or sheriff's office, and the money is later sent on to whichever court clerk holds the file. The sheriff's offices are staffed Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but the 24-hour lines at 870-659-2060 and 870-659-2066 are answered around the clock. Ask them whether someone can take a payment at night.
Carry a photo ID and know the jailed person's full legal name.
↑ Back to the question list6. Which payment types does the jail take?
Plan on cash in the exact amount. Ask the jail desk, 870-659-2064, if a money order or cashier's check is accepted, and whether a card can be run for a bond. Skip personal checks. Do not walk out without a paper receipt listing the case number.
↑ Back to the question list7. What does a bonding company take off the top?
Ten percent of the bond, and that rate is set by state law (Arkansas Code 17-19-101 and following). The company can also ask for collateral and a co-signer. The fee is gone for good, even if the charges are dropped. Bondsmen need a license from the Professional Bail Bond Company and Professional Bail Bondsman Licensing Board, so get the agent's license number and a written list of charges first.
↑ Back to the question list8. Can I pledge farmland or a house instead of cash?
Land can back a bond in Arkansas, which helps in a county full of farms. Expect to bring the deed, a recent tax assessment, and proof of equity that covers the bond, and each person named on the deed has to sign. Land generally has to be in Arkansas. Whether this court insists on Arkansas County land is something the clerk can answer: 870-659-2098, extension 1. Ask before paying for a title search.
↑ Back to the question list9. The arrest was at night or on a weekend. Who answers?
The sheriff's 24-hour lines, 870-659-2060 for the South District and 870-659-2066 for the North District. Staff there can say if the booking is done and if a bond figure has been set. Clerk and court offices keep weekday hours, so a payment that needs the clerk waits until they open.
↑ Back to the question list10. Can the booking deputy or the sheriff lower the amount?
That is outside the jail's power. The sheriff's office runs the jail and collects money but has no power to change the figure. Only the judge who set it, or the circuit judge on a motion, can do that, and the motion usually comes from a lawyer.
↑ Back to the question list11. When will a judge say no bail at all?
Article 2, Section 8 of the Arkansas Constitution allows bail to be denied only for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption great. Separately, someone already out on bond for a felony who is arrested on a new felony can be held under Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 9.6. Paying the DeWitt bond will not free someone when parole officers, probation staff or some other county still want that person held. Ask the clerk to tell you the exact reason for any hold.
↑ Back to the question list12. We cannot afford a lawyer. What now?
At the first appearance, speak up and request a public defender right then. The Eleventh District East office is in Stuttgart, 870-659-2930, and it serves the whole county. The judge decides who qualifies, often from a short income form. An appointed lawyer is free to request a smaller bond.
↑ Back to the question list13. Do Stuttgart or DeWitt keep their own cells?
Neither city runs a jail. Stuttgart Police, 870-673-2171, and DeWitt Police, 870-946-2496, bring arrests to the county jail in DeWitt. Gillett and St. Charles have no lockup. An officer in Stuttgart may keep a person at the police station briefly while paperwork is written, before the drive south.
↑ Back to the question list14. Where are teenagers taken?
The county has its own youth lockup, the Arkansas County Juvenile Detention Center, at 1010 Ricebelt Avenue, DeWitt, 870-946-4464. County officials said in early 2026 that it was housing juveniles. Teenagers do not get a cash bond. A juvenile judge in the circuit court decides release at a detention hearing, usually within 72 hours. The circuit clerk's DeWitt office, 870-659-2099, extension 1, can give the hearing time. Records for minors are kept private, and they never appear on the adult search.
↑ Back to the question list15. Does money on the jail account count toward release?
It does not. The lobby kiosk and the online deposit site fund the person's account for snacks, phone time, and video visits. None of it pays a bond. If a website asks for a card to post a bond online, stop and call 870-659-2064 first.
↑ Back to the question list16. What if my person never shows up in Stuttgart or DeWitt?
The judge issues a warrant and begins bond forfeiture. Cash can be forfeited in full. A bondsman gets a short window to bring the person back before owing the court, and then looks to the co-signer. Call the clerk the same day, Stuttgart 870-659-2098 or DeWitt 870-659-2099, and ask for a new date. Judges sometimes undo a forfeiture when the person shows up quickly with a good reason.
↑ Back to the question list17. How and when does the cash come back?
Once the case closes, if the defendant made it to each hearing on the calendar. The clerk mails a check to whoever signed the receipt, after taking fines, costs, and restitution the judge orders. Expect a wait of several weeks. Hold on to the receipt, because refunds stall without it. A bondsman's fee never comes back.
↑ Back to the question list18. Which courthouses and clerk desks in Arkansas County might hold the case?
Two county seats means two of almost everything. The side of the county where the arrest happened decides which building gets the file. Felonies go to circuit court, while tickets and misdemeanors go to district court:
- Circuit Court, Northern District: 302 South College Street, Stuttgart, AR 72160 · clerk 870-659-2098
- Circuit Court, Southern District: 101 Court Square, DeWitt, AR 72042 · clerk 870-659-2099
- District Court, Stuttgart: 304 South Maple Street, Stuttgart, AR 72160 · 870-673-7951
- District Court, DeWitt: 120 Court Square, DeWitt, AR 72042 · 870-946-2503. Arrests around Gillett and St. Charles are handled through the DeWitt side.
Keep the date of birth and full name close by when you call. The clerk can tell you the next hearing and whether a bond figure is on file.
↑ Back to the question list19. What changes if federal agents made the arrest instead of local police?
A local bondsman and the DeWitt bond schedule drop out of the picture. A charge brought under federal law belongs to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas, and Arkansas County sits in its Delta Division. Here is the usual path:
- A federal agency, such as the FBI, DEA, ATF or a wildlife officer on refuge land, makes the arrest.
- A magistrate judge runs the first hearing. It may be held at the federal courthouse in Helena, 617 Walnut Street, Helena, AR 72342 (clerk questions go to Little Rock), 501-604-5351, though many hearings end up in Little Rock.
- A Pretrial Services officer asks about work, family and old cases before the hearing.
- The government may ask to keep the person locked up. If so, a detention hearing is set within a few days.
- A judge who allows release sets federal terms, such as a signed bond, reporting in, or staying inside the state.
While the case is open, the U.S. Marshals decide where a held person sleeps. That is often a contract jail away from DeWitt. Reach them at U.S. Marshals Service, 600 West Capitol Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72201, 501-324-6256.
↑ Back to the question list20. Can ICE stop a DeWitt release once the bond is paid?
It can. Under 8 CFR 287.7, ICE may send the jail a detainer asking for notice before release and for up to 48 more hours of custody., counting weekends and holidays. Arkansas has no state law that blocks the jail from honoring that request, so families should plan for a possible handoff.
Paying bond on the county charge still matters, since the local court date stays on the calendar. Arkansas falls under the ICE New Orleans Field Office, 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, 504-318-2360. People it takes from this part of the state are often moved south to Louisiana, to places such as:
- LaSalle ICE Processing Center: 830 Pinehill Road, Jena, LA 71342 · 318-992-1600
- Pine Prairie ICE Processing Center: 1133 Hampton Dupre Road, Pine Prairie, LA 70576 · 337-599-2400
To find someone after ICE picks them up, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System (https://locator.ice.gov/odls/). Enter the A-number with the birth country, or try a full name along with that country.
↑ Back to the question list21. How can I trace an Arkansas County arrestee who may have been moved?
Use these in order. Someone held in DeWitt can later go to a state prison unit or a federal hold:
- County jail: Arkansas County Inmate Search. Type the last name, then the first, and open the matching record. It lists the booking date, the charges and any bond. A Stuttgart arrest may take a while to show, since the person rides south to DeWitt first.
- VINE: VINELink (https://vinelink.vineapps.com/). Choose Arkansas, enter the name and press search. The result says if the person is locked up and names the place. You can also sign up for a call or text when that changes.
- Federal prisons: Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator (https://www.bop.gov/inmateloc/). Enter a register number. Without one, a full name with age or race works. It names the federal site and a release date. People still awaiting a federal trial may not appear, so call 501-324-6256.
- State prison: Arkansas Division of Correction Inmate Search (https://apps.ark.org/inmate_info/). Enter an ADC number or a last name and press search. The record shows the unit, a photo and the parole eligibility date.
22. Who can I call to make sure the bond details are still right?
Rules and figures can shift after this page was written, so check with a person before you drive to DeWitt. The jail desk at 870-659-2064 can confirm the bond figure and what forms of payment it takes. For court dates, call the circuit clerk at 870-659-2098 in Stuttgart or 870-659-2099 in DeWitt.
