Even though the Arkansas County Jail is licensed for 150 inmates, it is often forced to accommodate many more, especially on weekends. In most city and county jails in Arkansas, at least 40% of the population turns over each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. About 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Offenders who stay longer than a year are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder, and because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, anyone arrested in Arkansas County on such charges remains in one of the Arkansas County facilities much longer.
The only charges for which bail can be denied in Arkansas are capital offenses where the proof is evident or the presumption is great. For all other offenses, Arkansas County judges may release a defendant on their own recognizance, set conditions of release, or set bail.
Arkansas County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 3,400 offenders per year.
The Arkansas County Detention Center is the county jail for Stuttgart, DeWitt, Gillett, Humphrey and the rest of Arkansas County. The Arkansas County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Johnny Cheek, runs the jail from its South District office at 1000 Ricebelt Avenue in DeWitt. The jail line is (870) 659-2064; the sheriff’s office answers 24 hours a day at (870) 659-2060 in DeWitt and (870) 659-2066 at the North District office, 312 South College Street in Stuttgart. Men and women are held here. Most are waiting for their cases to move through court, while others are serving shorter county sentences or waiting to be transferred to the Arkansas Division of Correction after a prison sentence.
To find out whether someone is in custody, start with the sheriff’s online roster at arcosheriff.org/roster-choose. It has two lists: everyone currently at the detention center, and everyone released in the last 48 hours. That second list helps if you think your person may already be out. The sheriff’s office notes that it cannot guarantee the roster is accurate, so if something looks wrong, call the jail.
After an arrest, the person is booked in DeWitt: fingerprints, photo, a records check and a property inventory. Under Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1, they must be brought before a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours. Arkansas’s constitution says everyone is bailable before conviction except in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Rules 9.1 and 9.2, the judge first considers release on the person’s own recognizance or with conditions, and sets money bail only when nothing else will reasonably make sure they come back to court. Call the jail for the bond amount and accepted payment methods. If you use a bail bond agent, Arkansas Code §17-19-301 sets the premium at 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5. It must be paid in full before release, along with a few small state-required fees that you don’t get back.
Ask the jail about visiting before you make the drive. Address letters with the person’s full name and inmate number, Arkansas County Detention Center, 1000 Ricebelt Ave., DeWitt, AR 72042. Write in blue or black ink. Books must be paperback and shipped straight from a retailer, and newspapers or magazines must come straight from the publisher. How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Arkansas County Jail?

Choice 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail

Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
