The Prairie County Jail is licensed to hold 64 inmates at a time, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails in Arkansas, at least 40% of the inmate population turns over each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take so long to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Prairie County on such charges remain in custody at one of the Prairie County facilities much longer.

Every defendant in Arkansas has a constitutional right to bail before conviction, except those charged with capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption is great. Judges in Prairie County can set bail for any other charge, or release the defendant on their own recognizance or with conditions.

Each year, approximately 1,280 offenders are arrested and detained by Prairie County law enforcement agencies.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Prairie County Jail?

There are three choices for putting money on an inmate's books:

Choice 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail

Ask the jail whether it takes deposits in person before you go.

Call Prairie County Jail to ask whether it has a Tiger kiosk for cash or card deposits, and where it is.

If you can't get your questions answered online call the Prairie County Jail at 870-256-4138.

Choice 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online

Tiger Commissary's online site lists the services set up for each jail, such as commissary orders or deposits.

Go to Tiger's online site, pick the state and the jail, and see which services it offers there.

Choice 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail

Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.

Call Prairie County Jail at 870-256-4138 to confirm the address to send the money order to and how they want it made out.

Failure to do this properly will delay your inmate getting his account credited and may require you to have to resubmit a second money order.

Call 870-256-4138 to ask facility personnel who to make the money order out to, and where to send it.

Postcards

The Prairie County Jail allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature.

Envelopes

The Prairie County Jail may also allow regular postcards and envelopes to be mailed to inmates as well, however more and more jails are no longer allowing envelopes due to concern about paper being dipped into liquefied drugs like methamphetamines and cocaine and then mailed into secure facilities.

Newspapers

Local or national newspapers may also be mailed to the inmate as long as they are mailed directly from the newspaper publisher.

Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books

Most jails allow books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address above.

Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Prairie County Jail standards will be disposed of.
