Miami-Dade Metro West Detention Center divides inmates into maximum, medium and minimum security levels, with 3,098 beds for adult male and female inmates.

Miami-Dade County is one of the largest counties in America and this facility is the biggest facility in the Miami-Dade County Corrections system. According to the County's reports, more than 80,000 inmates pass through this facility in the course of one year.

Metro West Detention Center is Miami-Dade County’s largest jail. It is at 13850 NW 41st Street, Miami, FL 33178, far out in western Doral near NW 137th Avenue. The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department runs it, and the facility’s number is (786) 263-5110. The jail started in 1987 as a trailer facility. A 1,002-bed building opened in 1991, and a larger addition followed in 1994. Metro West holds men only. Its 2023 PREA audit reported a design capacity of 2,984 and an average daily population of about 2,300, housed in 36 direct-supervision dorms plus a Special Management Unit with single cells. Young adult detainees who used to be housed at TGK were moved here in 2024.

Like every MDCR jail, Metro West holds men awaiting trial and men serving county sentences of up to 364 days. Longer prison sentences are served with the Florida Department of Corrections. People usually arrive after they’ve been processed elsewhere in the system, and releases for the whole department happen at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (7000 NW 41st St), not here. If you’re picking someone up, go to TGK.

Every arrested person sees a judge within 24 hours at first appearance (Florida Rule 3.130), in the 11th Judicial Circuit. The Florida Constitution (Art. I, §14) gives most defendants a right to reasonable pretrial release, except in capital or life felonies with strong proof and cases where no condition can keep the community safe. Starting bond amounts come from the Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 statewide bond schedule. The circuit can set higher local amounts, the judge can depart from the schedule, and certain charges must go before a judge before any release. For current bond amounts, call MDCR at (786) 263-7000. A licensed bail bond agent must charge the state-approved premium rate (section 648.33, Florida Statutes). You can check for outstanding warrants with the FDLE wanted persons database, though it doesn’t list every warrant.

Visiting is done remotely by video through ViaPath at miamidade.gtlvisitme.com. Ask your loved one to add you to his approved Master Visitation List first, then register online. Processing can take up to a day. You can book up to seven days out but not for the same day. Nobody else may join the call, and visitors must be fully and appropriately dressed. MDCR doesn’t post prices or visiting hours online, so call (786) 263-4119 with questions.

The MDCR inmate search shows where someone is housed and gives his booking number. All mail goes to one address, not to the jail itself: Name #Booking Number, Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, PO Box 20527, Tampa, FL 33622. Write only on plain white lined paper. Cards, photos, postcards and anything padded or colored will be rejected. For money, use TouchPay (online or (866) 232-1899, facility 233101), or the Metro West lobby kiosk. It takes cash, credit and debit, and is open 8:30 a.m.–9 p.m., except Tuesdays, when it opens at 4 p.m. Securus runs phones and eMessaging; set up an AdvancePay account at (800) 844-6591.

We couldn’t verify any fixed-route bus to the jail, and most visitors drive out NW 41st Street. The closest services are a couple of miles east along that road: Mobil at 10895 NW 41st St and Speedway at 10675 NW 41st St for gas, and McDonald’s at 11390 NW 41st St or Burger King at 11400 NW 41st St for food.

What happens during booking at Miami-Dade Metro West Detention Center?

After arrest, individuals are processed at Miami-Dade Metro West Detention Center, where they undergo a series of steps that determine their charges and whether they’ll be released on their own recognizance, allowed to post bail, or held until their court date.

The first rule for anyone arrested is to remain silent. Anything they say can be used in court, so it’s best to speak only to an attorney about the incident.

Here are the typical stages of the booking process at Miami-Dade Metro West Detention Center:

  • Verifying the person’s identity.
  • Taking mugshots.
  • Questions regarding medical and mental health history, along with drug and gang affiliations.
  • Collecting DNA if necessary.
  • Conducting a physical search.
  • Confiscating personal belongings.
  • Providing a phone call.

If you need details about an offender’s bail or bond, contact the facility at 786-263-5110.

How do you post bail in Miami-Dade County?

If someone is taken to Miami-Dade Metro West Detention Center in Miami for booking, the next steps depend on their case:

1. The individual may be released without bail, under a promise to appear at a court hearing.
2. They could be held in custody until their trial.
3. They may post a bail or bond for release. To find out the exact bail amount, call 786-263-5110.

Bail payments can be handled in various ways.

  • Cash bonds are paid in full, normally at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, by cash, cashier's check or money order, and card payments are often possible through a kiosk in the lobby or an online vendor for a convenience fee; have the inmate's full name and booking number ready, and reach the jail at 786-263-5110.
  • Licensed bail bond agents in Miami-Dade County can facilitate payment.
  • Property bonds are available in many courts: an owner may pledge land or a home after proving clear title and equity of at least the bond amount (often double) with the deed and a recent tax or appraisal figure, and the court that set bail decides whether to accept it.
