Miami-Dade Pre-Trial Detention Center, also known as Dade County Jail or DCJ, has male and female inmates and has been designated to hold pre-trial detainees, those awaiting their sentences, and some individuals who are eligible for pre-trial release after a screening that has determined their eligibility.

The Pre-Trial Detention Center (PTDC) is at 1321 NW 13th Street, Miami, FL 33125, in the Civic Center area next to the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building. It is Miami-Dade’s oldest operating jail. It opened in the early 1960s as part of a criminal justice complex connected to the courthouse, which makes it convenient for moving people to court. The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department runs it. The main number is (786) 263-4110. A PREA audit in March 2026 listed a design capacity of 1,458 and an average daily population of about 1,200, all adult men. The county has approved plans for a new jail to replace its oldest buildings, but PTDC was still operating as of that 2026 audit.

People at PTDC are mostly men waiting for their cases to be resolved, along with some serving county sentences of less than a year. A first appearance before a judge takes place within 24 hours of arrest under Florida Rule 3.130, in the 11th Judicial Circuit. Most defendants are entitled to reasonable pretrial release under Article I, Section 14 of the Florida Constitution. The main exceptions are capital and life felonies with strong evidence, and cases where no conditions can protect the public. The Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 uniform bond schedule (AOSC25-69) sets minimum pre-first-appearance amounts for this year. Local judges may set higher ones, and some offenses require a hearing before release (sections 903.011, 903.046 and 907.041). Small misdemeanors often end in a notice to appear.

For the bond amount and how to post it, call (786) 263-7000. If you use a bail bond agent, Florida requires the agent to charge the premium rate approved by the state, not a negotiated one (section 648.33). Whatever happens with bond, release doesn’t happen at PTDC. MDCR releases people from Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, 7000 NW 41st St, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., and personal property is picked up there too. To check for a warrant first, search FDLE’s wanted persons list, keeping in mind that it isn’t complete.

Family visits are video visits you make from home through ViaPath (miamidade.gtlvisitme.com). You have to be on the inmate’s approved visitor list, register with ViaPath, and wait for approval, which can take up to 24 hours. Visits can be scheduled up to a week in advance but never same-day. Only the registered visitor may be on camera, dressed appropriately. For prices, open time slots or problems, call Inmate Visitation at (786) 263-4119.

Find someone’s booking number and location with the MDCR inmate search. Don’t mail anything to the NW 13th Street address. Letters go to: Name #Booking Number, Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, PO Box 20527, Tampa, FL 33622, written on plain white lined paper only, with no cards, photos or postcards. Securus handles prepaid phone accounts ((800) 844-6591) and eMessaging. Deposits to a trust account can be made through TouchPay online or by phone at (866) 232-1899 (facility 233101). PTDC’s lobby kiosk has short hours: Thursday through Sunday, 5:30–9:15 p.m.

PTDC is the easiest Miami-Dade jail to reach without a car. The Civic Center Metrorail station (also signed UHealth–Jackson), at NW 12th Avenue and NW 15th Street, is a short walk away, and Metrobus Routes 12 and 21 stop at the station. If you’re driving, Shell at 1201 NW 7th St and Valero at 1705 NW 7th St are the closest gas stations we found. For fast food, there’s a McDonald’s at 3747 NW 7th St and a Wendy’s at 697 NW 37th Ave, both about two miles west.

Paying bail for someone in Miami-Dade County

After being arrested and booked into Miami-Dade Pre-Trial Detention Center in Miami, the arrestee's situation will proceed in one of three ways:

1. They may be released without bail and required to attend a court hearing.
2. They may be held in custody until their court date.
3. Bail can be posted for their release; call 786-263-4110 for the exact bail amount.

There are multiple ways to pay bail.

  • Cash bonds are paid in full at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, accepted as cash, cashier's check or money order, and many jails let you pay by card at a lobby kiosk or with an online bond vendor for a fee; have the inmate's full name and booking number when you go, and the jail is at 786-263-4110.
  • Licensed bail bond agents in Miami-Dade County can facilitate the process.
  • Many courts accept a home or land as collateral for bond, as long as the owner proves clear title and equity at least equal to the bond amount (often twice it) with a deed and a current tax or appraisal value, and the court that set bail approves the pledge.
