Montgomery County Correctional Facility Inmate Mail Guidelines

Postcards
The Montgomery County Correctional Facility allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature. You must include your return address on the card or it will not be delivered.

Envelopes
The Montgomery County Correctional Facility also allows only white envelopes to be mailed to inmates. Colored envelopes will be sent back to the sender. You must include your return address on the card or it will not be delivered.

Photographs sent through a third party vendor (ie. Shutterfly, FreePrint,  etc.) will not be accepted.  All photographs must arrive in a plain white envelope with a clearly marked return address from the individual sending the photographs.  All photographs will be inspected.  Photos larger than the standard 4X6 are not acceptable.  Any photographs deemed to be a violation of Departmental Policy will be returned to sender.  Scroll down for all policies regarding photos.

Newspapers
Local or national newspapers may also be mailed to the inmate as long as they are mailed directly from the newspaper publisher.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate. Inmates are only allowed to possess up to seven (7) Magazines and Books total. If a Magazine or Book arrives that exceeds the total allowed, it will be considered contraband and confiscated and placed in the inmate’s property. Inmates may coordinate for an outside party to pick up confiscated reading material. It is the responsibility of the inmate to ensure that they do not exceed the seven item limit and to coordinate property retrieval by an outside party. Please check with an inmate prior to sending reading material to ensure they do not exceed their limit. If an inmate has reached their limit of reading material, any subsequently received reading material will be immediately returned to sender and will not be stored or kept at the facility.

Books
The Montgomery County Correctional Facility allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address above.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Montgomery County Correctional Facility standards will be disposed of. Inmates are only allowed to possess up to seven (7) Magazines and Books total. If a Magazine or Book arrives that exceeds the total allowed, it will be considered contraband and confiscated and placed in the inmate’s property.  Inmates may coordinate for an outside party to pick up confiscated reading material. Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.

Mailed Items NOT Allowed

If your inmate is mailed anything other than a letter in a white envelope, postcard or greeting it won't be delivered.

Examples of prohibited items include:

  • Books and Magazines in excess of seven (7) items (this means total items in inmate's possession).
  • Colored envelopes. (All mail must come in white envelopes).
  • Stamps and stickers.
  • Musical greeting cards.
  • Altered mail such as perfumed or lipstick covered.
  • Paper with any type of stains such as grease.
  • News clippings.
  • Crayon, felt tip or hand painted drawings.
  • Photographs sent through a third party vendor (ie. Shutterfly, FreePrint,  etc.) will not be accepted.

POLICIES REGARDING MAILING PHOTOS TO Montgomery County Correctional Facility

Montgomery County Correctional Facility Photo Policy

  • Photos should be sent in a white envelope addressed to inmate as follows:

  • Photos should not exceed 4 inches high x 6 inches wide.
  • Send no more than five photos at one time.
  • All photos will be photocopied. The photocopy will be delivered to the inmate and the original will be retained for 60 days.  An inmate may arrange to have an outside party retrieve the original mailing within 60 days of the date the photocopy is delivered to the inmate.  The individual must be prepared to present a government-issued ID to show that they are the individual identified to pick up the original mailing.  Mail pick-up may occur on the following dates and times only: Monday through Friday, 7am to 3pm (excluding holidays).  Mail that is not picked up within 60 days will be destroyed.
  • Polaroid Photos are prohibited.
  • Photos of weapons are prohibited.
  • Photos of drugs, the consuming of drugs or alcohol is prohibited.
  • Photos of lewd behavior or people exhibiting too much skin is prohibited.
  • If any photo is deemed to be prohibitive, all photos in that batch will be returned to sender.

Important Mail Tips

  • Mail is always scanned and inspected for contraband, obscenity and other rule infractions.
  • Assume that everything you write will be read by jail staff and can and will be used against you or your inmate in court.  
  • Never write anything about the inmate's court case you wouldn't want read aloud in court.
  • Mail is considered by the jail to be a privilege. Any violations of the mail policies can result in the inmate's mail privileges being suspended.
  • The introduction of contraband by you into the jail through the mail could result in criminal charges being filed against both you and the inmate.
