Chisago County Juvenile Services uses many alternatives to incarceration and deterrents before they consider detention. These diversion programs include probation, home detention, community services, and interventions for the safety of a child. Petty offenses result in 6 months monitoring by the probation officer, with the officer enforcing any requirements such as attendance at educational classes, assessment for substance use, restitution, and community service. In the case of misdemeanors and felonies they may receive probation up to a year, with the ability to extend to their 19th birthday if the court determines it is necessary. There are several levels of supervision that begin with an in person meeting once a month up to meetings each week. If these methods do not work, or they are deemed to be a danger to themselves or others in the community, they will be detained.
