Jasper judges must find probable cause on a no-warrant arrest inside two days, else the lowest bond. Walker warrant arrests who can't post reach court within three days. On domestic violence charges, Jasper bail may be delayed 24 hours.

Anyone who gets more than a year will probably spend that time in an Alabama state prison. For now, they remain in the Jasper jail while the state sends for them. Then, ADOC moves them to an intake center for check-in. There, officers weigh health and mental health care, any gang ties and their risk level. The final stop is a prison that matches them.

A district judge sitting as juvenile court hears delinquency cases in Jasper. Juvenile probation officers screen each referral and release the child, resolve it informally or file a petition. Walker County has no juvenile detention center, so Jasper-area youths needing lockup are placed outside Walker. Minors aren't on the adult roster.

Federal arrests usually involve groups such as Homeland Security Investigations, the DEA, and the Secret Service. The Tuscaloosa courthouse takes Walker County charges in the Northern District (Western Division): Richard Shelby Federal Building and Courthouse, 2005 University Boulevard, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, 205-561-1670. That Tuscaloosa office has no full-time clerk; try the clerk's office in Birmingham, 205-278-1700. Federal court stopped meeting in Jasper after December 2024, so Walker County cases go in Tuscaloosa. An initial appearance comes quickly in front of a magistrate judge. The judge uses a report from a pretrial officer. There is no set bail price here. The detention hearing sets if they may go home, using federal bail law (the Bail Reform Act).

• Booking prints get run against U.S. systems that ICE uses. ICE may then issue a detainer.
• ICE asks the sheriff to hold the person for no more than 48 hours after the local case ends. Weekends and holidays are part of that limit.
• A posted bail won't clear the detainer.
• Officers from ICE can come for them before time runs out. When ICE stays away, that means they are released.

• ICE's online detainee locator looks up people with the A-number plus birth country. If the A-number is unknown, use their full name, along with birth date and birth country.
• Where they are sent is up to ICE and can change.

Federal booking photos are not shared to the public or the media. Sharing is allowed only through the U.S. Marshals, and just to find an escapee or fugitive, when people nearby must be warned quickly or if sharing it could help catch them or alert neighbors.
