Arrested in San Mateo County: finding someone in the Redwood City jails

San Mateo County runs down the Peninsula from Daly City through San Mateo and Redwood City to East Palo Alto, plus the coast at Half Moon Bay. The Sheriff books adults at the main county jail on Bradford Street, 300 Bradford Street in Redwood City (650-363-4000). Search San Mateo County Inmate Search.

10. What if a federal agency arrested them?

Federal arrests often involve teams from the U.S. Marshals and the Postal Inspection Service. The county belongs to the Northern District of California, so cases happen in San Francisco, 450 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102. Clerk's phone: 415-522-2000. The first court date happens soon, before a federal magistrate judge. Expect questions from a pretrial services officer before court. Unlike the county, the federal court will not use a fixed dollar figure. A short hearing applying federal bail law settles what conditions apply.

Look them up on the sheriff's roster. The Marshals Service branch for the Northern District of California sits at 450 Golden Gate Avenue, 20th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94102. Dial 415-436-7677 to ask about the person. While it's open, U.S. Marshals can place the person in a nearby jail through a contract. Prison time in a federal case sends them from the local jail into the BOP. The online federal locator for the prison once they arrive.

11. ICE detainer: what to expect

  • ICE hears about most arrests through the prints the jail shares. ICE may then file a detainer.
  • On form I-247A, ICE asks the jail to keep the person pending a federal pickup up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Redwood City jailers apply SB 54, the Values Act: the county case sets release, and ICE gets a release date or custody just with a court warrant or for a qualifying serious offense. After those 48 hours pass, the hold ends.
  • Posting the bond does not cancel this hold.
  • ICE agents often take custody at the Redwood City jail inside that 48-hour window. If ICE never comes, this means release once the time is up.
  • The agency chooses the next facility.
  • The online Detainee Locator finds people using the alien number (A-number) plus birth country. Missing the alien number (A-number)? Type in date of birth, native country and their full name instead.
  • ICE handles cases from Northern California out of its San Francisco field office, at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111; call 415-365-8800.

12. After a state prison sentence: the next steps

Felony prison terms are overseen by the state prison system, the CDCR. First, most people wait in the Redwood City jail until the CDCR schedules the move, sometimes for months. The trip ends at reception, where they get checked in. Staff review them after checking medical and mental care, how much security they need, and known gang ties. Their next stop is the prison that fits them.

Open the CDCR online locator for their unit. The California state prison guide covers every state unit.

13. Can I get San Mateo County mugshots?

Open the San Mateo County inmate search to see what a San Mateo record shows; mugshots may not be included.

Section 13665 is the key law. Social media is what it covers. Nonviolent arrests are the main target. Police can't post those mugshots online there. Photos posted there expire after 14 days. A judge can also allow a post. Jail websites are outside this law. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.

Sheriff's staff decide which photos go out — reporters can call 650-363-4911. ICE's online public records request is the way to get an ICE jail photo; ICE decides. U.S. mugshots are not given with reporters or the community. There are only a few exceptions. The Marshals can post a jail photo to find an escaped prisoner, to help find someone or alert the community or when it is required right away to keep people safe.

14. Which agency arrested them in San Mateo County?

Half Moon Bay, Millbrae and other towns contract with the Sheriff.

Back to questions ↑

15. Are warrant arrests from San Bruno or Millbrae held at Maguire?

Yes. Warrant arrests from Daly City to East Palo Alto are booked at Maguire Correctional Facility on Bradford Street. Peninsula defense counsel can arrange surrender if the warrant is yours, which spares you an arrest at work. To confirm a warrant first, the Sheriff's Office searches names while you wait on the line, and it covers statewide questions too. The court's online case portals list open cases. The County Center clerk, 650-261-5100, can put you back on calendar and mail the notice.
