2. Which Utah County jail number do I dial?

3. Is the Booking Bureau open at night and on holidays?

Yes. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Two daily lockdown windows, 5:15 to 6:00 a.m. and 5:15 to 6:00 p.m., stop release processing. Self-surrenders are not accepted from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Plan around those hours, and call 801-851-4210 if you are close to one.

4. Who sets the amount after an arrest in Utah County?

A county jail official, meaning the sheriff or a designee, makes the first decision. That person may release someone on a signed promise to appear under a written sheriff's policy, or may set a financial condition for certain misdemeanors and eligible felonies.

A judge takes over at the first appearance. The judge must weigh ability to pay and the chance the person will skip court, and sets one amount for the case.

5. How soon after the arrest can I pay?

Not until booking is finished, which may take several hours. Release, bail, and visits all wait for that step. Phone 801-851-4210 to learn whether your person's booking is done.

Back to questions ↑

6. What payment will the jail window take?

Cash, a cashier's check, a money order, or a credit card. Credit cards must be used in person and carry an additional transaction fee. Personal checks and loose change are refused.

Write cashier's checks and money orders to "The Utah County Jail." Bring the person's full name and booking number.

Back to questions ↑

7. What does the jail need from the court before it lets someone go?

Court paperwork that says "Released by Judge" or "ROR." A notation that a warrant was recalled is not enough by itself. Once the right order arrives, staff finish the release as fast as they can.

The jail cannot give out court dates. Contact the court of jurisdiction, or ask the Booking Bureau at 801-851-4210 where the case sits.

Back to questions ↑

8. When will my person actually walk out?

The standard release time is 3:15 p.m. when the person went to court that day, so wait until then to drive to Spanish Fork. Releases cannot be handled during the two lockdown windows.

Keep your payment receipt until the person is out.

9. Does putting money on a jail account get someone free?

No. Deposits go through jailatm.com, by phone at 866-394-0490 at any hour, by mail to the jail, or at the lobby kiosks in Visiting or Booking. That money pays for commissary and calls. An inmate must keep $50 in the account unless it is used to post bail, so a deposit is not a bail payment.

10. Provo, Spanish Fork, or American Fork: which courthouse?

The Fourth District Court sits in Provo at 137 North Freedom Boulevard, 801-429-1000, with 13 judges, and in Spanish Fork at 775 West Center Street, 801-756-9654. The juvenile court also uses an American Fork office at 75 East 80 North, Suite 202, 801-804-4800. Ask the Booking Bureau which courthouse has the case.

11. How do I get a public defender in Utah County?

Tell the judge at the first appearance that you cannot afford a lawyer. Utah County's indigent defense is provided by the Utah County Public Defender Association, 180 North University Avenue, Suite 140, Provo, which also uses conflict counsel when needed. The Provo court at 801-429-1000 can explain how to apply.

Back to questions ↑

12. What will a bond agent charge, and what must I be given?

The agent must be licensed by the Utah Insurance Department, and the first premium may run from 10 to 20 percent of the bond. Preparing paperwork may cost up to $20 per set of forms, and paying by card may add up to 5 percent.

Before release, the agent must hand you a written disclosure showing the bond, the fee breakdown, the collateral, and the terms for getting it back.

Back to questions ↑

13. Can someone be released without paying?

Yes, for some people. Each Utah sheriff adopts a written own-recognizance policy. Ask at 801-851-4210 whether this charge fits the Utah County policy, and whether the paperwork has arrived.

Back to questions ↑

14. When does Utah say no bail?

The constitution permits denial for capital offenses, for a new felony committed on probation, parole, or bail for an earlier felony, and for other listed crimes when clear and convincing evidence shows danger or flight. Each category needs substantial evidence on the charge.

Arrests for a protective-order violation bring a hold until the first appearance. A detained person has a right to an expedited appeal.

Back to questions ↑

15. What if we can't raise the bail?

After seven days the person may move to change the condition. The law presumes the person cannot pay, so the judge may lower the amount or impose conditions that cost nothing.

A lawyer can help prepare the request. The court at 801-429-1000 can explain the filing steps.

Back to questions ↑

16. A hearing in Provo or Spanish Fork was missed. What now?

A bench warrant can issue and a posted bond can be forfeited. When someone willfully fails to appear, or does so repeatedly, the court must consider whether a bail bond would improve attendance. Contact the court at 801-429-1000 immediately.

Back to questions ↑

17. Can I post my house or land?

Utah's bail statutes spell out cash and bonds from licensed sureties. Pledging real estate is a request for the judge in the case. Call the court at 801-429-1000 to ask what documents it would want before you pull deeds.

The juvenile court has offices at 137 North Freedom Boulevard in Provo, 801-354-7200, and 775 West Center Street in Spanish Fork, 801-804-4780. Minors do not appear on the adult search.

Back to questions ↑

19. How does someone report to jail to start a sentence?

Back to questions ↑

20. How do I avoid a fake payment request?

Texts that ask for a payment through a link or QR code are scams; the courts do not collect that way. Gift cards and app transfers are also red flags. Call the Booking Bureau at 801-851-4210 directly.
