About the Washington County Jail

Washington County Jail is a medium-security Adult facility located at 403 Court Street, PO Box 307, Chatom, AL 36518. This facility has been operational since 1989 and has a capacity of 80 inmates.

The Jail houses inmates who are convicted of offenses ranging from low-level misdemeanors to more serious charges such as rape, robbery, and murder. Inmates are allowed to receive mail, make phone calls, and receive visitors.

Visiting hours are Wednesday - Sunday from 10am - 11am, 12:30pm - 1:30pm and 2pm - 3pm, and inmates can have two 1-hour visits per week.

All mail must be opened before being given to inmates and certain items such as blank paper, photos, body fluids, hair and items depicting violence, sex or gang affiliation will be rejected.

Inmates are allowed to make phone calls during daytime hours only and calls are limited to 15 minutes. Additionally, inmates can have two 45-minute onsite video visits per week which must be scheduled in advance.

The phone number for the jail is 251-847-2202 and inquiries regarding visits, mail, or phone calls can be made by calling the jail supervisor in case of an emergency.

The jail utilizes about 40 inmates in its in-house work lines for kitchen, laundry, and other activities, as well as inmate labor for trash collection on county roads and assistance with projects for schools and the public.

Washington County Jail has been the subject of a class action lawsuit due to oppressive and inhumane conditions. Inmates have reported being personally billed for their health care needs, and audio revealed that jail staff debated the bill for an inmate in an emergency situation who later died at the hospital.

To receive phone calls from an inmate in Washington County follow these instructions:

Washington County Jail uses the services of NCIC for inmate phone calling. It is called a ‘friends & family account”.

In order to receive phone calls from your inmate, you need to do the following:

  • Register here, or by phone 800-943-2189
  • Choose Alabama.
  • Choose Washington County Jail
  • Select your Inmate.
  • Enter the phone number your Inmate will be calling.
  • Fund your Account. ($10-$100 at a time)

NOTE:
1.   You cannot receive any calls to your phone number from your inmate until both you and your phone number are registered.
2.  When you do receive a call, the number you will view on your phone from the incoming call is: 800-943-2189.
3.  When allowed by Washington County Jail, families can also leave secure voicemails for inmates to listen to.

Texting and Emailing an Inmate

How Can I Communicate with an Inmate in the Washington County Jail using an Online Messaging Service?

Washington County Jail uses the services of Inmate Sales to allow text messaging communication between inmates and their friends and family.

Chirping is the product name for inmate texting.  
This product allows inmates to send chirps (texts) to friends and family members.


Here's how it works:

  • First you must register, and then funds are added to the inmate's account. If you want to pay by phone, call 877-998-5678.
  • When an inmate gets the device they may send 5 free automated messages each day for the first three days of possession of the chirping device.  
  • These automated messages will inform the person the inmate Chirped who is sending the Chirps and the facility they are Chirping from.
  • It will then ask them to go to a direct link to the inmate's account on the Inmate Sales website.
  • The website will then instruct them to use a credit card to put money on the inmate's account.  

Cost of Chirping:  

  • Inmates will be charged a monthly service fee of $4.00.  Inbound and Outbound Chirps are $0.10 each.
  • If an inmate has available funds on their chirping device they will be able to chirp any cell phone and that chirp will appear to be a normal text. 
  • If you wish to stop receiving Chirps from an inmate, reply to the Chirp with STOP.
