Garner Correctional Institution
Garner Correctional Institution
You can speak with someone at the 593-bed Garner Correctional Institution about an inmate at any hour by calling 203-270-2800.
This facility books and processes misdemeanor and felony arrestees for the county. Once booking and processing is complete, inmates are either bonded out, released on their own recognizance, or held until their trial is resolved.
See who is currently in custody by using the inmate search tool.
Those sentenced to less than one year serve their sentence at the jail. Those sentenced to more than one year are sent to the Connecticut State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
This page has information about the visitation schedule, inmate account funding, mail, phone calls, voicemail, email and texting, tablet rentals, bail bond instructions, and commissary.
Keep the inmate’s booking number or jail ID close by. It’s required for most communication. If you can’t find it online, call Garner Correctional Institution at 203-270-2800.

Want to look up an inmate at the Garner Correctional Institution? The Official Jail Inmate Roster shows their criminal charges, bond amount, visitation eligibility, and in many cases their mugshot. You can also call the jail at 203-270-2800 for the information you need.
Active Arrest Warrants
Connecticut’s Judicial Branch posts an online list of certain arrest warrants: those issued for a violation of probation, a failure to appear in court on existing charges, or an order to incarcerate. It isn’t a list of every warrant in the state. Warrants from police investigations generally aren’t posted, so if a name doesn’t appear, that doesn’t mean there’s no warrant.
Public Information on Court Cases
To find information on a specific court case, use the Judicial Branch’s online case look-up, which covers most cases in the Supreme Court, the Appellate Court, and the Superior Court, including criminal cases across Connecticut. Some records, such as juvenile, youthful offender, and sealed cases, are not available to the public.

Bail Bonds
In Connecticut, the first decision about bail is made at the police station after an arrest. Police can release the person on a written promise to appear, or set a bond. If the person isn’t released, an intake, assessment and referral specialist (formerly called a bail commissioner) with the Judicial Branch’s Court Support Services Division can review the case and change the bond. The judge makes the final decision when the defendant appears in court. If the judge orders bail, it can be posted as a cash bond for the full amount, or as a surety bond through a licensed bondsman, whose fee is set by state regulation at 10% of the first $5,000 and 7% of the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers explain how to find an inmate in the Garner Correctional Institution, how jail rosters work, and what happens after an offender is arrested and booked. Still have questions? Call 203-270-2800 for help.
The Garner Correctional Institution is licensed to hold 593 inmates at a time, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. Connecticut has no county jails. The state Department of Correction runs every facility, and several of them serve as the state’s jails for people awaiting trial while also holding sentenced inmates: Bridgeport, Hartford, and New Haven Correctional Centers, Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center, and York Correctional Institution, which holds every woman in state custody. Cheshire, Garner, and MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institutions also hold some pretrial detainees. Brooklyn Correctional Institution and the Cybulski Community Reintegration Center hold only sentenced men, and Osborn and Robinson Correctional Institutions house sentenced men almost exclusively. At the facilities that hold pretrial detainees, at least 35-40% of the inmate population turns over each month, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder, and because those cases take so long to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Fairfield County on such charges remain in state custody much longer.
⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessGarner Correctional Institution is a Level 4 high-security prison at 50 Nunnawauk Road, Newtown, CT 06470. The main phone number is (203) 270-2800. It opened in 1992 on 118 acres and is named for Ward A. Garner, who was warden of the old state prison in Wethersfield from 1911 to 1918. In September 2026, it held about 565 men.
Garner is the Department of Correction’s main facility for men with significant mental health needs, and it has a dedicated mental health unit. It also houses general population inmates, men in close custody, and federal high-security inmates, and it holds both pretrial detainees (about 250) and sentenced offenders (about 310). Among its pretrial detainees, the most common charges include assault on a police officer, murder, criminal violation of a protective order, criminal attempt, and violation of probation.
Garner allows two in-person visits and two video visits per week for general-population units, each lasting 60 minutes. Video visits must be booked through the DOC’s visiting request site. Visits run in three blocks: 8:45 to 11 a.m., 1 to 2:30 p.m., and 6 to 9 p.m. Which days and blocks are open depends on the inmate’s housing unit. Men in the chronic discipline and administrative segregation units get shorter, non-contact visits, and some are limited to immediate family. The facility occasionally cancels visiting sessions for training, so call before you go.
All visitors must be on the inmate’s approved visiting list; the inmate requests an application from their counselor, and approval usually takes two to three weeks. Adults need a valid photo ID. Children under 18 must be with an approved adult who brings the child’s birth certificate and a second document with the child’s name. Former offenders and people with pending cases generally aren’t approved without the warden’s permission. Modest clothing is required.
There is no public bus route to Garner; Newtown isn’t served by the fixed-route buses in the Danbury area, so plan to drive or arrange a ride. Send mail to the inmate’s full name and inmate number at the facility address, with your return address. Money can be added through JPay, TouchPay, Western Union, or by money order to the Inmate Trust Fund, P.O. Box 290800, Wethersfield, CT 06129-0800. Phone calls are free.

How is booking conducted at Garner Correctional Institution?
After an arrest, individuals are transported to Garner Correctional Institution for the booking process. This procedure ensures the person’s identity, assesses charges, and determines if they will be released, eligible for bail, or detained until court.
Remaining silent during this process is vital. Anything said could be used as evidence, so it’s wise to wait for an attorney before speaking about the arrest.
Here’s a breakdown of the booking steps at Garner Correctional Institution:
- Verifying identification information.
- Capturing mugshots for record-keeping.
- Health assessments and questions about criminal history.
- Possible DNA collection.
- Physical search for contraband or weapons.
- Securing personal belongings.
- Granting a free phone call.
For questions about an arrestee’s bond, call the facility at 203-270-2800.
How to post bail for someone arrested in Fairfield County
When an individual is arrested and booked at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, the outcomes include:
1. Release without bail, under the condition they appear for their court date.
2. Remain in custody until the court appearance.
3. Post a bail or bond for release. Contact 203-270-2800 for specific bail amounts.
Bail payments can be made in different ways.
- Cash bonds must be paid in full, either at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, and are accepted as cash, cashier's check or money order; many jails also process cards through a lobby kiosk or online vendor for a fee, so bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and phone the jail at 203-270-2800 if needed.
- You can work with a licensed bail bondsman in Fairfield County.
- Many courts allow a property bond, letting an owner put up land or a home after proving clear title and equity of at least the bond (often double) through a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, with approval from the court that set bail.
