Every detail on this page is checked by hand, not scraped. This unofficial directory helps friends and family of incarcerated individuals find critical information — inmate lists, locations, bail resources, visitation hours, rules, and text, phone, email, and mail services — for jails, detention centers, and prisons across the United States.
The 1473-bed Robinson Correctional Institution has staff available around the clock to provide inmate information at 860-253-8000.
All people arrested in the county for a misdemeanor or felony are brought here for booking and processing. If their charges call for detention, they are held until they are released on bail, released on their own recognizance, or ordered to remain in custody until their trial is complete.
The facility’s current roster can be viewed using the inmate search tool.
If sentenced to less than one year, an inmate serves the time in this county. If sentenced to more than one year, the inmate is sent to the Connecticut State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
This page explains how to find an inmate on the official jail roster, how to get to the jail, and how to use services such as the visitation schedule, inmate account deposits, mail, phone calls, voicemail, email and texting, tablet rentals, bail bonds, and commissary.
Keep the inmate’s booking number or jail ID on file for mail and communication. If it’s not online, call Robinson Correctional Institution at 860-253-8000.

Connecticut’s courts post an online list of arrest warrants for people who have violated the terms of their probation, failed to appear in court on existing charges, or been ordered to incarcerate by a judge. The list does not include every warrant in the state, so someone could still have a warrant even if their name doesn’t appear.
If you need information on a particular court case, the Connecticut Judicial Branch offers an online case look-up covering the Supreme Court, the Appellate Court, and the Superior Court, including criminal cases across the state. Most cases are public, though juvenile, youthful offender, and sealed records are not.

Whether a defendant gets bail is first decided at the police station after the arrest. Police may release the person on a written promise to appear, or set a bond. If the police don’t release them, an intake, assessment and referral specialist with the Court Support Services Division, a position that used to be called bail commissioner, can review the bond. The judge makes the final decision at the defendant’s court appearance. Bail ordered by the judge can be a cash bond, where the full amount is posted, or a surety bond from a licensed bondsman, who charges a state-regulated fee of 10% of the first $5,000 and 7% of the balance.

While licensed for 1473 inmates, the Robinson Correctional Institution often exceeds that number, especially on weekends. Connecticut doesn’t have county jails. Instead, the state Department of Correction runs a single statewide system, and many of its facilities hold both pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates. Men who are arrested and can’t make bail are usually held at Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, or Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center, and women are held at York Correctional Institution. Cheshire, Garner, and MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institutions also house some pretrial detainees. Not every facility takes pretrial inmates, though: Brooklyn Correctional Institution and the Cybulski Community Reintegration Center hold only sentenced men, and Osborn and Robinson Correctional Institutions hold almost only sentenced men. At the facilities that do hold pretrial detainees, at least 35-40% of inmates turn over each month, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months. Approximately 8-9% remain incarcerated for six to twelve months. Those held longer than a year are typically facing serious charges such as rape or murder, which take longer to prepare for trial, so offenders arrested in Hartford County on those charges stay in custody much longer.
⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessCarl Robinson Correctional Institution is a Level 3 medium-security prison at 285 Shaker Road, Enfield, CT 06082. The main phone number is (860) 253-8000. It opened in 1985 on land that was once part of a Shaker farm community dating to 1792, and it is named for Carl Robinson, the first African American warden appointed in Connecticut. It has a designed capacity of about 1,510 and held about 1,225 men in September 2026.
Robinson CI houses sentenced adult men, most of them classified at Level 2 or 3. The state doesn’t publish a breakdown of the offenses its population is serving time for. The facility offers intensive inpatient substance abuse treatment, culinary arts, machine tooling, small engine repair, and community college courses, which makes it one of the state’s key prisons for job training before release.
Robinson allows two in-person visits and one video visit per week, with the week resetting every Monday, and up to three visitors per visit. In-person visits run Monday through Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. (no visiting on Wednesdays) and on weekends from 9 to 10 a.m., 1 to 2 p.m., and 6 to 9 p.m. Housing buildings alternate days from week to week, so you’ll need to know your loved one’s housing unit. Visits last one hour; arrive 15 minutes early. Video visits must be booked through the DOC’s visiting request site, and space is limited.
Visitors must be on the inmate’s approved visiting list before requesting any visit. The inmate asks their counselor for a visiting application, and approval usually takes two to three weeks. Adults need photo ID. Children under 18 must come with an approved adult who brings the child’s birth certificate and a second document with the child’s name. Former offenders generally need the warden’s approval. Wear modest clothing, and leave phones and bags outside the visiting room.
There is currently no fixed-route bus service to the prisons in Enfield and Somers. CTtransit’s weekend service to these facilities was discontinued in 2021, so most visitors drive or share rides. Send mail to the inmate’s full name and inmate number at the facility address, with your return address. Money can be added through JPay, TouchPay, Western Union, or by money order to the Inmate Trust Fund, P.O. Box 290800, Wethersfield, CT 06129-0800. Phone calls are free.
