The fastest way to find an inmate in the York Correctional Institution, check their charges and bond amount, see when they can have visitors, or view their mugshot is the Official Jail Inmate Roster. Prefer to talk to someone? Call the jail at 860-451-3001.
The Connecticut Judicial Branch keeps an online list of arrest warrants for three situations: violation of probation, failure to appear on existing charges, and orders to incarcerate issued by a judge. Other warrants, including most issued during police investigations, are not on the list, so a search with no results doesn’t rule out a warrant.
Information on most Connecticut court cases is available to the public online. The Judicial Branch’s case look-up covers the Supreme Court, the Appellate Court, and the Superior Court, including criminal cases statewide. Juvenile, youthful offender, and sealed records are kept confidential.

Bail is first addressed at the police station. After an arrest, police may release the person on a written promise to appear in court or set a bond amount. If the person stays in custody, a specialist from the Court Support Services Division, known as an intake, assessment and referral specialist and formerly called a bail commissioner, can review and modify the bond. The final decision rests with the judge at the defendant’s first court appearance. Bail can be paid in full as a cash bond, or posted as a surety bond through a licensed bondsman. Bondsmen charge a state-regulated fee of 10% on the first $5,000 of the bond and 7% on the remainder.

Although the York Correctional Institution is licensed for 1151 inmates, it frequently holds more than that, particularly on weekends. Unlike most states, Connecticut has no county jails, so there is no separate local jail system. Instead, the state Department of Correction houses people awaiting trial and people serving sentences, often in the same building. Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, and Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Centers act as the state’s main jails for men, and York Correctional Institution fills that role for women. Cheshire, Garner, and MacDougall-Walker hold a smaller number of pretrial detainees. By contrast, Brooklyn Correctional Institution and the Cybulski Community Reintegration Center don’t hold pretrial inmates at all, and Osborn and Robinson Correctional Institutions hold almost none. At the facilities with pretrial detainees, at least 35-40% of the population turns over every month, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, with roughly 8-9% staying six to twelve months. Inmates who stay longer than a year are usually charged with serious crimes like murder or rape, and because those cases take a long time to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in New London County for them stay in custody much longer.
⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessYork Correctional Institution, at 201 West Main Street, Niantic, CT 06357, is Connecticut’s only prison for women. The main phone number is (860) 451-3001. Because it is the only women’s facility, York holds every woman in state custody, from those just arrested and awaiting trial to those serving long sentences, at every security level from 2 to 5. The site dates to 1918, when it opened as the state farm and reformatory for women; the current York facility opened in 1994. It has a designed capacity of about 1,460 and held about 900 women in September 2026.
York serves every superior court in the state, and about four in ten of its residents are awaiting trial. Among its pretrial detainees, the most common charges include violation of probation, failure to appear, risk of injury to a minor, criminal violation of a protective order, and possession of narcotics. York’s programs include the 80-bed Marilyn Baker House for intensive drug treatment, a hospice program, a parenting program called Caregiver and Me, an animal care program, and a reentry center.
York allows two visits Monday through Friday, which can be any mix of in-person and video, plus one visit on the weekend. In-person visits don’t need to be scheduled, but video visits must be booked through the DOC’s visiting request site. Visit times depend on the inmate’s housing unit and inmate number, and the most recent posted schedule is from 2023, so call before you go. No courtesy visits are allowed in the first 72 hours after a woman is admitted.
All visitors must be on the inmate’s approved visiting list; the inmate requests an application from her counselor, and approval usually takes two to three weeks. Adults need photo ID. Children under 18 must come with an approved adult who brings the child’s birth certificate and a second document with the child’s name. People with criminal records generally need the warden’s permission. Dress modestly and leave personal items outside the visiting room.
Southeast Area Transit (SEAT) Route 3 runs between New London and Niantic on weekdays and Saturdays, with no Sunday service, but it ends in Niantic center rather than at the prison, so you may need to walk or take a taxi the rest of the way. Send mail to the inmate’s full name and inmate number at the facility address, with your return address. Money can be sent through JPay, TouchPay, Western Union, or by money order to the Inmate Trust Fund, P.O. Box 290800, Wethersfield, CT 06129-0800. Phone calls are free.
After arrest, individuals are processed at York Correctional Institution, where they undergo a series of steps that determine their charges and whether they’ll be released on their own recognizance, allowed to post bail, or held until their court date.
The first rule for anyone arrested is to remain silent. Anything they say can be used in court, so it’s best to speak only to an attorney about the incident.
Here are the typical stages of the booking process at York Correctional Institution:
If you need details about an offender’s bail or bond, contact the facility at 860-451-3001.
