Jails, State Prisons and Juvenile Detention in New London County, Connecticut: What’s the Difference?
Unlike most states, Connecticut has no county-operated jails. In 1968, Connecticut combined its county jails and state prisons into one correctional system operated by the Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC). People arrested in New London County who cannot obtain release on bail, or who must remain in custody while awaiting trial or sentencing, are housed in state-operated correctional facilities. These include correctional centers in Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven and Uncasville, which function much like county jails in other states. Women awaiting trial or serving sentences are generally housed at York Correctional Institution. A person arrested in New London County may be held in a facility elsewhere in Connecticut. Many people in these facilities have not been convicted of a crime. To locate someone in state custody, use the Connecticut inmate search.
Police departments throughout New London County may have temporary holding cells or police lockups where arrested individuals are detained during booking and initial processing. These are not county jails and are generally intended for short stays. Depending on the charges and circumstances, someone may be released with a promise to appear in court, released after posting bail, or held for a court appearance. Those who remain in custody are transferred to a Connecticut DOC correctional facility rather than a county jail. If someone was recently arrested and does not appear in the Connecticut inmate search, contact the arresting police department to determine whether the person is still being held locally or has been transferred.
Young people under 18 arrested in New London County are generally handled through Connecticut’s juvenile justice system, which operates separately from adult corrections. Juveniles who require secure pretrial detention may be placed at the state’s Juvenile Residential Centers in Bridgeport or Hartford, operated by the Connecticut Judicial Branch. Not every arrested juvenile is detained; a judge determines whether detention is necessary. These centers provide supervision, education, counseling and other services while juvenile cases proceed. Certain serious offenses may be transferred to adult criminal court, subject to special rules for minors. Juvenile detention records are generally confidential, so young people will not appear in the public adult inmate search. Parents or guardians trying to locate a detained juvenile should contact the appropriate juvenile court, juvenile probation office or arresting police department.
The state facility descriptions were checked against the Connecticut DOC's published operations and inmate-information guidance, including its confirmation that York houses both pretrial and sentenced women. Each of the facilities on this page will have information about the jail/prison, inmate services, court information and inmate bail and bonding for pretrial offenders.

Middlesex County Juvenile Facilities
When there are jails on this page from another county, and it seems like they don't belong, it is because the main jail in this county either does not have a jail of its own, is temporarily closed, or sometimes runs out of room and needs to use another jail for its overflow. Offenders arrested in this county will still go to court here, and will most likely need to bailed or bonded out here, but they may be detained at one of these other facilities.
