Nebraska county jails and state prisons

Nebraska has 93 counties. The sheriff runs the jail where the county still has one. Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy have the beds. A Sandhills county often books into a neighbor, because a jail built for eight people does not stay open once the town shrinks. City police departments have holding rooms. They are not county jails.

This is one of the states that writes jail rules in one place. The Jail Standards Board sits inside the Nebraska Crime Commission. The governor appoints it. The statute calls for 11 members: the corrections director or a designee, the state fire marshal, two county commissioners, a sheriff, a police chief, a lawyer, two lay members, and three people who run a juvenile detention center, a staff-secure youth facility, or a jail with more than 50 people. Standards for adult jails have been in effect since 1980. Juvenile detention standards date to 1993. Staff inspect every facility once a year. The board meets quarterly, and it can ask a district court to close a jail that will not comply.

Jails in Nebraska hold people before trial and people serving a year or less. A longer felony sentence goes to the Department of Correctional Services. A federal sentence goes to the Bureau of Prisons. The Crime Commission counts 72 active jail facilities. When one of them holds someone for another county, for the state, or for the U.S. Marshals, it bills a daily rate. That rate is local. There is no statewide fee.

How many county jails are there in Nebraska?

Seventy-two active jails, not one per county. Douglas County in Omaha and Lancaster County in Lincoln account for a large share of the beds. The rest are smaller, and a fair number of the 93 counties contract. A full jail in the west means a drive, not a second building in the same town.

State prison is a different map. Nebraska State Penitentiary and the Reception and Treatment Center are in Lincoln. The reception center opened in 2022, joining the old diagnostic center and the Lincoln Correctional Center. In 2026 it added a 64-bed mental health unit, a 32-bed geriatric unit, and a 30-bed secure youth unit. Tecumseh State Correctional Institution is the maximum-security prison in the southeast. The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women is in York. Community corrections centers in Lincoln and Omaha are the step-down beds.

How many juvenile detention centers are there in Nebraska?

The Jail Standards Board inspects four juvenile detention facilities. Those are the secure centers that hold a youth before a hearing. Douglas County Youth Center in Omaha and the Lancaster County center in Lincoln are the two largest. Northeast Nebraska Juvenile Services in Madison covers a stretch of the northeast. A youth in one of those four is usually waiting on court.

A commitment is a different placement. The state youth rehabilitation and treatment centers take youth the court has placed in state custody. They are not the four detention centers, and they are not county jails. Search the county of the arrest. What the first days in a Nebraska county jail are like

Booking is a line: identity, prints, a medical screen, a search, property bagged, one phone call. The person has not been convicted. The pod still runs on counts. In January the holding cell is cold. Food is plain, the uniform does not fit, and the first night is noisy. Withdrawal from alcohol or methamphetamine can start before the bond hearing.

Deputies who apply the rules the same way to everyone run a quieter floor. Uneven rules are how contraband moves. Douglas and Lancaster can separate by risk. A small western jail often cannot, and a full jail there means a transfer.

Larger Nebraska jails sell tablet time, video visits, and deposits through a vendor. A small jail may still be a phone account and a visit through glass. Those privileges can be shut off.
