Checking whether someone is in custody

Every Comal County arrestee goes before a Judge Magistrate, who holds court every day, holidays included, usually starting about 9:30 AM. The magistrate reviews probable cause, explains the charges and rights, sets bail and takes requests for an appointed lawyer. Arrests and bail

The jail will never phone you asking for bond money. Treat such a call as a scam. Comal County warrants and self-surrender

Property after release
Collect anything left behind within 30 days of release, or the jail destroys it under state law. When someone has been transferred to another agency, such as TDCJ, that person needs to give the jail the name and phone number of whoever will pick up their property. Commissary orders that arrive after a release must be claimed within 72 hours, and they aren't refunded.

Longer sentences
People serving short county sentences stay in New Braunfels. A New Braunfels prisoner given state jail or prison time is handed to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and from then on is found in the TDCJ inmate search.
The building
Comal County housed inmates in the limestone courthouse downtown from 1939 to 1985. They then moved to the Walter Fellers Law Enforcement Center, which started with 144 beds and grew to 337 in 1999. The current jail opened in August 2020 with 582 housing beds and room to grow to 900-1,000. Its rated capacity in the Texas Commission on Jail Standards population report for September 1, 2026 is 583 beds. How the schedule works: every visit at the Comal County Jail, in person or from home, is a video visit on The Visitor system by IC Solutions, and the open days and times appear in your IC Solutions account when you schedule: choose the date from the list of available days, then a time from the available slots. - Register first: registration is free; you add your ID details and the person you want to see, and you can only visit inmates on your approved list.
- On-site visits: held at video terminals in the jail’s visitation center while the inmate stays in the housing unit. Sign in 10 minutes before your time with a valid U.S. government-issued photo ID, then enter your confirmation code (your account phone number plus your 4-digit PIN) at the station.
- Who can’t visit in person: anyone held in the Comal County Jail within the past six months.

Planning a trip to the New Braunfels lockup? Nothing happens without a reservation: the Sheriff’s Office sends all on-site and home-video sessions through IC Solutions, whether you sign up on its website, at the machine in the Bonding lobby, or over the phone (888-506-8407). Showing up without a booked slot does not get you in. On the day, have photo identification issued by a U.S. government agency and be signed in at the jail no less than 10 minutes before your time. - IC Solutions shows the price and length of a remote video visit before you confirm it. Rates are set by the provider and can change.
Video Visitation Rules
Understanding the rules completely are the responsibility of both you and your inmate. Not knowing the rules will NOT be accepted as an excuse if you make a mistake and violate them. Disobeying them could result in being banned from have future visits.
• Any inmate or visitor whose behavior is disruptive during a visit may have his/her visiting privileges suspended/terminated.
• All visits are subject to monitoring and recording.
• All visits must be scheduled ahead of time; the IC Solutions calendar shows which time slots are open.
• Be logged in or checked in before the scheduled start time.
• Valid picture identification (e.g., driver's license, State I.D., or Military I.D. with picture) is required of all visitors, with the exception of children under the age of 17.
• Visitors under the age of 17 must be accompanied and supervised by an authorized adult visitor.
• Visitors who 'arrive' after the scheduled start time may not be allowed to visit.
• Clothing must cover all private/sensitive body areas.
• The visitation schedule may be canceled or altered on holidays or for safety/security reasons.
• Comal County Jail can disconnect, deny, change, or cancel a visit at any time.
• Internet connectivity issues during offsite visits will NOT be refunded.
• Each visitation session will show a timer to display elapsed time.
• After your visit has ended your connection will be terminated automatically.
