About the Maricopa County Estrella Jail

Maricopa County Estrella Jail is an all-female facility located at 2939 W. Durango Road Phoenix, AZ 85009.

In 1991, it was constructed with an inmate capacity of 1,380 and has a total square footage of 281,072.

Maricopa County Estrella Jail houses all classification levels of female inmates, including those who have been detained for misdemeanor and felony offenses. It has a special program for mentally ill inmates.

Inmates are allowed to send and receive mail and publications from publishers, as well as money from approved sources, and can make calls to approved contacts. The facility offers onsite and remote video visits.

Although recreation time and sufficient food that meets nutritional standards are both offered, the jail has faced various issues related to inmate care, including understaffing, inadequate record keeping and failure to provide medical care. In 2011, a U.S. district court judge ruled that the conditions at the jail were unconstitutional and ordered Sheriff Joe Arpaio to provide adequate medical and mental health care.
