Is there a warrant out for your arrest in Los Angeles County or somewhere else in California? Do you need information about a court case involving you or a loved one? The California Superior Court is a good place to start.
Under the California Constitution, most criminal defendants in Los Angeles County are entitled to bail before trial, apart from certain capital and violent felony cases. The California Supreme Court has ruled that bail must be set with the defendant’s ability to pay in mind, and that judges should turn to less restrictive conditions when those would protect the public and ensure a return to court. Per Rule 4.101, a defendant’s choice about a jury trial can’t be considered in setting bail.
To get an inmate’s bail, call the Metropolitan LA Jail at 213-485-2555. As long as you know the charge they were arrested on, you can look up the Los Angeles County bail schedule yourself. The county accepts cash, a surety bond, or a property bond.
The Metropolitan LA Jail is licensed to hold 25 inmates at a time, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails in California, at least 35-40% of the inmate population turns over each month, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take so long to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in this county on such charges remain in custody at one of the Los Angeles County facilities much longer.
Each year, Los Angeles County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 529,180 offenders.
Once someone is arrested, they are taken to Metropolitan LA Jail for booking. This process involves identifying the individual, determining charges, and deciding if they will be released on their own recognizance, released on bail, or held in custody until their court date.
It’s important for the arrestee to stay silent, as anything they say can be used against them. The best advice is to avoid answering any questions about the arrest until legal counsel is present.
The booking process at Metropolitan LA Jail typically includes the following steps:
Depending on circumstances, booking can take anywhere from one hour to up to 48 hours, especially during busy periods or if the individual is uncooperative. For questions about paying an arrestee’s bond or bail amount, contact the facility at 213-485-2555.
