In many jails and most prisons, inmates and their loved ones are allowed to message each other using private, secure electronic messaging systems that are referred to as email.
Inmates are allowed limited access to send messages for a fee, per word or length of time at the keyboard. The fee is deducted from their inmate account. It is sometimes the policy that the first contact must be initiated by the inmate.
Some electronic messaging services have limits that allow you to send an email letter with attachments, but do not allow the inmate to respond to you electronically.
All incoming and outgoing messages are screened for suspicious content before being forwarded to the inmate or the inmate’s outside contact. Any violation of the institution’s email policies will result in complete loss of these privileges.
