What is a supermax facility?

A supermax facility treats each inmate as a high security risk due to their original conviction or how they have behaved since their incarceration. Inmate movement is limited, staff to inmate ratio inmate is higher, and inmates are strip searched before and after each movement, even if they are just using the shower.

Many Supermax inmates are locked in their cells for 23 hours a day at a minimum. They remain isolated from other inmates at all times. Those who roam free are watched by a gun tower, human eyes and/or video at all times.
