By law, a court cannot place excessive bail on a person. But what is considered excessive is relative. To be ruled excessive bail, the amount and terms must not be unreasonable, in comparison to similar offenders and crimes.

Every defendant is entitled to a ruling by an appeals court if they believe their bail is excessive.
