What is Jail?

Jails are facilities that have been designed to detain people (adults and juveniles) who have been accused of committing crimes and also those who are serving sentences after they have been convicted by the courts.

On average, half of the people in jails have not been convicted of the crime they've been charged with; they are pre-trial. The other half of the jail population is made up of convicted inmates serving sentences of less than one year.
